Research
Effects of Water-Rock Interaction
on Organics: Implications for
Hydraulic Fracturing Fluid
Engineering
I am working on a project that assesses the effects
of hydraulic fracturing fluids on organic compounds.
When fluids are injected into the subsurface from
processes like hydraulic fracturing or CO
2
sequestration they significantly alter the mineralogy
and geochemistry. Despite the research done in the
past with hydraulic fracturing, few studies have
been conducted on the presence of organics in
produced water from shales which had undergone
hydraulic fracturing. Therefore, the goal of my
project is to better understand the fate of organic
compounds once they interact with fluids from
hydraulic fracturing or CO
2
injection. It has potential
to not only improve well production but also reduce
costs in wastewater treatment and evironmental
contamination.
